Tish’ah B'Av, Observed Saturday Evening, July 21-Sunday, July 22

According to Mishnah Ta'anit chapter 4, among the calamities on Tish’ah B'Av were the decree that the Israelites would have to wander 40 years in the wilderness and the destruction of the First and Second Temples.

On Tish’ah B'Av, the same restrictions that apply on Yom Kippur -- no eating or drinking, no washing, no anointing, no wearing of leather shoes, and no sexual relations -- apply, and they apply from sundown to nightfall.

On Tish’ah B'Av, Saturday evening, July 21, there will be Minchah at 8:10 pm.  Arvit will follow at 9:10 pm. It will include the reading of Eikhah/Lamentations and selected Kinot/dirges. On Sunday, July 22, Shacharit will begin at 8:45 am. Minchah will begin at 7:45 pm with tallit and t'fillin, and will include the fast-day Torah and Haftarah readings. Arvit will be at 8:30 pm. The fast begins at 8:29 pm Saturday night and concludes Sunday night at 9:11 pm.

We will need six people present and fasting to have the Torah and Haftarah readings at Minchah on Tish’ah B'Av. If you know that you will be fasting and can attend Minchah that day, please contact Diana Savit at dms [at] savitlaw [dot] com or 301-589-5856, or David Narrow at DMNarrowEsq [at] gmail [dot] com or 301-897-5619.
