May Program:

Is There a Jewish Approach to Honesty and Truth?

We raise our children to tell the truth, to be honest with us even when the consequences may be harsh. But such lessons may be difficult in a volatile political environment, as unsubstantiated assertions dominate both public and political discourse.

What does the Torah tell us about honesty and truth? Is it acceptable to bend the truth to spare someone’s feelings? To protect one’s reputation or influence an outcome? How should we respond, as parents and participants in our community, to an environment in which truth seems relative and facts are a matter of opinion?

Amy Woolf is an Ohr Kodesh member (and former OKC preschool mom) who works at the Congressional Research Service at the Library of Congress. Her work requires a commitment to truth and a fidelity to facts, even when such things seem out of style.
