A Path Forward: Community Responses to Hate
SPECIAL PROGRAM WEEKEND JANUARY 24-26
Featuring the Tree of Life Synagogue Torah Cover

Join us for all or part of this amazing weekend, inspired by an artistic response to the horrible tragedy of the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh on the Shabbat morning of October 27, 2018.

Ohr Kodesh will be the only area synagogue to be hosting the commissioned Pittsburgh Torah Cover as it travels across the country as an inspiration to communities to come together for introspection and programming to consider how to best counteract hate.  This beautiful Torah cover was commissioned by the Cantors Assembly of America as a way of giving back to the Jewish community of Pittsburgh and to honor its religious leaders, including Rabbi Hazzan Jeffery Myers of Tree of Life Synagogue, who is also a member of the Cantors Assembly.

Jeanette Kuvin Oren, the artist who designed this new Torah cover, also designed the Torah covers for Tree of Life back in 2007. Ms. Oren is also a former member of Ohr Kodesh.

Sponsored by the Ohr Kodesh Response-To-Hate task force, part of our goal for this weekend is community-building – to engage our local Jewish and non-Jewish community partners, as well as our elected officials, in meaningful dialogue.

The weekend will contain four distinct events:

  1. Friday night: Davening, followed by a Community Dinner. The dinner will involve a learning program, as well as a discussion with our own members who are connected to the Pittsburgh community. Community partners will be invited to attend. To register for the dinner, click HERE

2. Shabbat Morning: Dedicated Sermon by Rabbi Fishman. Rabbi Fishman will speak about how we move forward from hate. The Torah Cover will be on
display.
3. Shabbat Afternoon: A Panel of Elected Officials. After Kiddush, we’ll be inviting elected officials to join us for a town-hall format discussion about community safety.
Community partners will be invited to join us.
4. Sunday Morning: ABRS-Sponsored Event. Our religious school students will participate in an art project that is focused on age-appropriate responses to hate and integration in our own community.
