Diana Savit

Diana Savit and her husband, Marvin Szymkowicz, joined Ohr Kodesh in 1991 when they bought a house in the neighborhood in order to live within walking distance of a synagogue. Since then, their family has celebrated three children becoming b’nai mitzvah and one wedding at Ohr Kodesh, and also benefitted from the support of our incredible community during times of sorrow.

Diana has been pleased to give back to Ohr Kodesh by serving on, and later co-chairing, the Religious Activities Committee, serving a term on Ohr Kodesh’s board, volunteering with the Chevra Kadisha, serving as a Torah gabbai, reading Torah and the occasional haftarah, and providing pro bono legal advice when appropriate. She is also honored to serve as a backup lollipop distributor, when David Narrow is elsewhere.

In addition to her efforts on behalf of Ohr Kodesh, Diana has served as a committee chair and then president of the Women’s Bar Association of the District of Columbia and of its affiliated Foundation, on the board and as vice-chair and chair of the Chelsea School (a school for students with language-based learning disabilities), on the board and as president of Washington Independent Services for Educational Resources (an association of Washington metro-area professionals whose work involves education), on the board of the American Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists, and on the board of the Council for Court Excellence. She is also a member of the Civil Rules Advisory Committee of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

When not volunteering, visiting Israel, playing with her cats Maude and Lebowski (yes, they are named for the movie), studying with the group she and Marvin joined in 1988 (and still going strong!), bonding with her Rosh Chodesh group (begun in 1995), studying with Rabbi Fishman’s Tuesday morning class (The Jewish Political Tradition), or enjoying her children and grandchildren, Diana practices law at Savit & Szymkowicz, LLP, specializing in education issues (especially special education–securing appropriate services for students with disabilities), employment, and resolving business disputes.

While gratified and enriched by both her professional and volunteer activities, Diana is proudest of her children, Sarah (married to Avram Hein), Rebecca (married to Robert Scialli), and Evan, and of her sabra grandsons, Maor and Binyamin Hein. She remains eternally grateful to her husband and partner in every sense of the word, Marvin Szymkowicz.
