The Fast of 10 Tevet

The Tenth of Tevet, Asarah b’Tevet, which falls this year on January 7, 2020, is a minor fast day.  It commemorates the date when, according to the Tanach (II Kings 25:1-4), the Babylonians laid siege to Jerusalem. The siege continued for over two years, until the city walls were breached, on a day commemorated by the fast of the 17th of Tammuz (Shiv’ah Asar b’Tammuz) and then the Temple was destroyed, according to tradition on the Ninth of Av (Tish’ah b’Av).

Observance of this fast day entails refraining from eating and drinking; the other restrictions that apply on Yom Kippur and Tish’ah b’Av (washing, anointing, sexual relations, and wearing leather shoes) do not apply on minor fasts. Also, on minor fast days, the restrictions apply only from dawn until nightfall (6:15 am to 5:45 pm this day), not from the previous sundown as on Yom Kippur and Tish’ah b’Av.
We are planning to have Minchah with Torah reading, Haftarah, and the other elements of the fast day liturgy on that day. Minchah will be at 4:30 pm; Arvit will follow around 5:05 pm. (There will also be a regular Evening Minyan service - Arvit - at 8:00 pm that night.)

We will need six people present and fasting to have the Torah and Haftarah readings at Minchah. If you know that you will be fasting and can attend Minchah that day, please contact Richard Friedman at richard [dot] friedman [at] hhs [dot] gov.
