HAZAK: Lunch and Learn: “The Best Chanukah Gift Ever”

Murray & Nettie Kaye Social Hall (West Side)

Hazak will host the Jewish Genealogy Society of Washington (JGSW) to help each of us with tools to be able to tell our stories to our children and grandchildren.  Our first speaker will be Sheila Wexler, President of the JGSW, presenting Tracing Your Jewish Roots. It includes getting started, resources online, and DNA testing. The speaker will discuss her own genealogy experience followed by brief information about JGSGW.  “Getting Started in Jewish Genealogy" (published by Avotaynu) will be available for purchase for $15 to non-JGSGW members.

During hour 2 of this session, our own Ohr Kodesh Member Sarah Hyams will present her experiences with genealogy.  She began an interest in her history as a youngster, listening to oral histories with her cousins.  The Holocaust Museum introduced her to possible additional sources.  And she has done DNA testing to learn some surprising outcomes.  How she resolved to find the truth about her family story is an interesting example of how to develop your own genealogy search.

Following this December workshop, members of Hazak, will be participating in Perek Meyuchad, a program in the Alvin Browdy Religious school, where guests teach about this year’s theme, Jews Around the World. Members of Hazak will visit on one of the three Sundays in January (5, 12, or 26) to tell their stories to the children in small groups.

Bring your lunch and bring a friend.  There is a place for you (and your story) at our table.
